Greenville Health System was closely aligned with Cancer Centers of the Carolinas and needed a Radiation Oncology treatment facility on their new campus. As a part of the new replacement hospital, GHS had a CON that allowed them to build the Linear Accelerator. There were a lot of efficiencies to also having a Medical Oncology Treatment Facility associated with this CON and this combination was planned until an adjacent hospital system objected.
This linear accelerator was then planned to be connected to the hospital at a future date. It had to be self contained until that time. There is space for exam rooms, offices, control desk, changing rooms, toilets and of course the Linear Accelerator. The challenge with this project was meeting the schedule before the CON expired and planning for a future expansion, three times the size of the original, that may not happen.
